Galveston has been voted by Trip Advisor as being one of the “Top 10 Rising Destinations” in the United States. What can you do around the island before or after taking a cruise out of Galveston? We suggest you try these Galveston Island attractions.

The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier offers a number of  amusement rides ranging from the gentle to the truly thrilling, along with games of chance and skill, as well as a wide variety of eateries and retail stores. The Pleasure Pier was heavily damaged during Hurricane Ike in 2008, but reopened in 2012.

Moody Gardens is centered around three glass pyramids that contain a huge, indoor rainforest, a giant aquarium, and a museum. There are also a 3D theater, the 4D Special FX theater and the 3-D Ride film theaters. Nearby is Palm Beach, with white sand and freshwater lagoons and the 19th century style Colonel Paddlewheeler which features one-hour narrative cruises.

The Schlitterbahn Waterpark features a number of aquatic attractions and rides including uphill water coasters, water slides, kid’s playgrounds, whitewater rapids, wave pool, hot tubs, the Boogie Bahn surf ride, and the exclusive “Transportainment” river system. Because it can be converted to an indoor facility during the winter months, Schlitterbahn is open year round.

Finally, the Strand Historical District, where many buildings survived the great 1900 Storm, contains a variety of restaurants and shops. The Railroad Museum and the Texas Seaport Museum, which features the tall ship Elissa, are also located there. The Pier 21 Theater features short films such as “The Pirate Island of Jean Lafitte” and “The Storm.”

Here are a few great restaurants around the Galveston port.
